Schistosomiasis Control Initiative

SCI’s mission is to improve the health and development of the world’s poorest populations by eliminating schistosomiasis and soil transmitted helminths (STH) hookworm, whipworm and roundworm. Treatment removes worms, thus preventing anaemia, impaired growth and educational development in children. Treatment protects children from life-threatening conditions of bladder cancer, female genital schistosomiasis, liver fibrosis and hematemesis in later life.

SCI assists Ministries of Health in endemic countries to control and then eliminate schistosomiasis and STH from their population through mass drug administration campaigns utilising the WHO Drug Donation Programmes for praziquantel and albendazole, plus funding from DFID, World Bank, ENDFUND, Gates Foundation, and Private donors.

Over 200 million people in Africa, need regular treatment with praziquantel (for schistosomiasis), and 400 million need an annual treatment with albendazole (for STH), to eliminate these parasitic worms. For just £0.50 per person per year, we facilitate delivery of these treatments across Africa. Twitter @sci_ntds @schisto Link: www.sci-ntds.org
